Colorbond vs PVC vs Aluminium Gutters: Which Lasts Longest in Perth?

Compare Colorbond, PVC and aluminium gutters for Perth homes. See lifespan, cost per metre, corrosion resistance and which suits coastal or hills suburbs.

Choosing the Right Gutter Material for Perth Conditions

Perth’s climate is tough on gutters. Summers regularly push past 40 degrees Celsius with intense UV, winters bring concentrated heavy rainfall (around 733 mm, mostly between May and September), and coastal suburbs from Cottesloe to Two Rocks deal with constant salt-laden air. The gutter material you choose needs to handle all three stresses for decades.

The three materials most commonly installed on Perth homes today are Colorbond steel, PVC (vinyl) and aluminium. Each has clear advantages and trade-offs depending on your location, budget and how long you plan to stay in the home.

Colorbond Steel — The Perth Standard

Colorbond gutters are by far the most common choice in Perth. BlueScope’s Colorbond steel uses a zinc and aluminium alloy coating under a baked-on paint finish, giving it strong corrosion and UV resistance. It matches Colorbond roofing — which is fitted to the majority of Perth homes — so the finished look is seamless.

For coastal properties in suburbs like Scarborough, Fremantle or Hillarys, lighter Colorbond colours (Surfmist, Shale Grey) tend to hold up best because they absorb less heat and put less thermal stress on the coating. BlueScope offers a 36-year warranty on Colorbond products in most Perth metro applications.

PVC Gutters — Cheap Upfront, Costly Long-Term

PVC gutters are immune to rust and are the cheapest option to buy and install. They suit budget-conscious projects like granny flats or sheds. However, Perth’s extreme UV exposure is their downfall. PVC becomes brittle within 10–15 years in full sun, leading to cracks and splits that cannot be reliably repaired. The limited colour range (usually just white or grey) also yellows and fades noticeably.

PVC is not suitable for homes in bushfire-prone areas of the Perth Hills, as it does not meet BAL requirements under AS 3959.

Best For

Sheds, patios, carports and budget builds where long-term appearance is not a priority.

Aluminium — Premium and Long-Lasting

Aluminium gutters resist corrosion naturally and do not need a protective coating to prevent rust. This makes them an excellent choice for homes within 500 metres of the ocean — in suburbs like North Fremantle, City Beach and Trigg — where salt spray is relentless. Aluminium can also be powder-coated to match any colour scheme.

The trade-off is cost. Aluminium gutters are typically 15–25% more expensive than Colorbond for supply and installation.

They can also dent more easily during installation or from falling branches.

Best For

Coastal homes, premium builds, and homeowners who want maximum corrosion resistance without ongoing maintenance.

What About Zincalume?

Zincalume (unpainted zinc/aluminium coated steel) is sometimes offered as a budget alternative to Colorbond. It performs reasonably well in inland Perth suburbs, but it lacks the baked-on paint layer that gives Colorbond its long-term UV and corrosion resistance. In coastal areas, Zincalume can show surface corrosion within 10–15 years. It also has a utilitarian, industrial appearance that most homeowners find less appealing than Colorbond’s colour range. For primary residences, the small price premium for Colorbond is almost always worthwhile.

Installation Matters as Much as Material

Even the best gutter material will fail prematurely if installed incorrectly. Key installation factors include correct fall toward downpipe outlets (minimum 1:500 gradient), adequate bracket spacing (maximum 600 mm apart for steel, 450 mm for aluminium), properly sealed joins using polyurethane sealant rather than silicone, and pop-rivet connections at laps. Cutting corners on installation is the most common reason for premature gutter failure in Perth — regardless of the material chosen.

Which Should You Choose?

For most Perth homes, Colorbond steel offers the best balance of durability, appearance and value. If you live within a few hundred metres of the coast, aluminium is worth the premium. PVC should generally be reserved for secondary structures. Whatever you choose, professional installation ensures correct fall, sealed joints and proper bracket spacing — the factors that determine how long any gutter material actually lasts.
